Item description

Vintage original 3.25 x 5.5 in. "country of origin" German postcard featuring the handsome blonde German-born silent film and sound era actor, WERNER FUETTERER. Issued for publicity purposes during his career in the silent era, he is depicted in a close interior shot wearing a dark suit with a bow tie and posing in front of a dark backdrop. This "country of origin" postcard was signed in black ink by Werner Fuetterer and dated 1926, the year in which he appeared in eight silent films, including his most famous role of the Archangel in F.W. Murnau's Faust (see "Provenance" below). This vintage original silent film postcard is unused in fine condition with six vertical non-contiguous impressions down the right side that are not creases. While they go through portions of his signature and the date, they do not affect the quality of his signature or date. Provenance: Approximately 8 years ago, we purchased a collection of two albums of vintage original German postcards from a rare book dealer at an antiquarian book fair in Pasadena, California (see photos). Approximately half of the postcards were signed by the respective personalities and the ones that were dated by the actors are all dated "1926." We were informed by the dealer that these photographs came from a film collector in Germany who acquired the postcards at the time they were issued and then had them signed by the respective actors when he met them in person. We are now pleased to make these vintage original postcards available to other collectors. Werner Fuetterer (January 10, 1907 in Barth, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany – February 7, 1991 in Benidorm, Province of Alicante, Spain) was a German film actor who appeared in nearly 100 films between 1925 and 1967 and was known for Faust (1926), Never Trust a Woman (1930) and Das Rheinlandmädel (1930). He grew up on his father's hacienda in Guatemala and the family returned to Germany in 1919 and settled in Lübeck at the end of World War I. He subsequently took acting classes at the Berliner Schauspielschule and began his career in silent films at the tender age of 18 with the movie Die Brüder Schellenberg (1925). He was at his peak in the pre-war period and often played secondary leads or the sympathetic friend of the hero, but never managed the breakthrough to stardom, later turning to character and supporting roles. Fuetterer is perhaps best-known for his role as the Archangel in F. W. Murnau's classic silent film drama, Faust (1926), after which his name went around the world. He later retired from acting and managed a camping facility in Spain, where he died in 1991 at age 84.
