He looks well-preserved, and not much older than he was when he found the Ring at age 51. (He looked like a human in his thirties then, and now he looks like a human in his forties - at an age when Hobbits look closer to humans in their seventies.) Bilbo is descended from the great Hobbit warrior Bandobras (Bullroarer) Took, his great-great-great- granduncle. He is the grandson of Gerontius Took (the Old Took), former Thain of the Shire. Gandalf selected Bilbo as the Burglar for Thorin's company in part because of his lineage (and possibly also because of prophecy), and Bilbo helps them restore the Dwarf Kingdom under the Mountain at Erebor. Along the way, he finds the One Ring in Gollum's lair. He retires from adventuring to write his memoirs, and eventually leaves the Shire for Rivendell, leaving his home and Ring to his nephew Frodo.
