The “S V” on his cap reflects this, as do the Sons of Veterans membership badge (that is depicted on the viewer’s left) and the Past Camp Commander badge. The Sons of Union Veterans is a fraternal organization comprised of male descendants of Union Civil War veterans. It is the legal heir to the Grand Army of the Republic, whose members were Union Civil War veterans.
