WHAT IS HYRAX The Hyrax is a small, furry herbivorous mammal found in the Southern parts of Africa and the Middle East. They are members of the family Procaviidae and the order Hyracoidea, and the oldest fossil found of their ancestry has been dated back 37 million years ago at a site in the Middle East. They are mistakenly seen as rodents, in fact, the hyrax is more closely related to elephants, as they have characteristics common in elephants, such as small tusks developing from their incisor teeth, flattened nails on their toes lacking claws, a similar development of genitalia and longer gestation periods in females. There are four species of Hyrax; the rock (cape) hyrax (Procavia capensis), the yellow-spotted rock hyrax (Heterohyrax brucei), the western tree hyrax (Dendrohyrax) and the southern tree hyrax (Dendrohyrax arboreus). The Hyrax live in large groups in rocky cliff areas, where they can be seen huddling together basking in the sun. WHAT IS HYRACEUM The petrified and fossilized excrement of the Cape Hyrax is called Hyraceum, also called the Dassie. This fairly sterile fossilized excrement made up from urine, feces, pollen, plant residue and food, is highly valuable within perfumery as well as in traditional South African medicine. Hyraceum is also called "African Stones", as it hardens and become rock-like during centuries of fossilization, and has a very complex scent similar to notes of natural musk, castoreum, civet, agarwood and tobacco.
