Portland, Oregon, bears a rich and varied history since the first settlers established homes and businesses in the 1840s. By the time of the publication of this map, the city had experienced a significant period of growth and transformation as the nation neared the turn of the twentieth century, and the country was enjoying considerable prosperity spurred on by the industrial revolution during the so-called Gilded Age. The city's location on navigable waterways opened access and offered ample opportunities for trade, which brought immigrants from across the world who established communities and neighborhoods based on shared heritages and traditions, many of which exist to this day.
The city earned an infamous reputation during the latter portions of the nineteenth century for its numerous saloons and other establishments that catered to the thousands of sailors that traveled through the city between their deployments on vessels bound for exotic locations. Portland's access to waterways and the fertile soil in the region attracted thousands of migrants during the eighteenth century as settlers arrived during the migration known as the Oregon Trail in the 1840s. Portland's population would more than triple from 1900 to 1930, and it has become one of the most iconic cities of the Pacific Northwest with distinctive architecture and a diverse cultural landscape as well as an association with the arts.
This rare piece of cartographical history bears a distinctive aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present.
