The first settlements in Westfield, Massachusetts date back to 1630, and the region became an important trading hub as the nation developed and expanded. Westfield falls in the Springfield metropolitan area and grew to be a bustling manufacturing town during the nineteenth century as a major producer of bricks and cigars, which brought an influx of immigrants from across Eastern and Western Europe as well as the American South who established numerous neighborhoods and communities along shared traditions and heritage, many of which exist to this day. The city is split between the North and South sides by the Westfield River, which provided a valuable resource for manufacturers during the nineteenth century.
This bird's eye perspective was produced and published by the prolific American lithographer O.H. Bailey who, along with four other mapmakers, was responsible for more than half of the panoramic maps found in the Library of Congress's permanent collection. Panoramic maps served as marketing materials to promote economic opportunities to entice residents and merchants alike and featured prominent civic features, notable buildings, and natural attractions. These maps bear a distinctive style that is immediately recognizable and creates a link to the past that offers a glimpse into towns and cities' history, illustrating the development and evolution of their unique past.
By 1875 Westfield had developed as a thriving manufacturing hub and was undergoing a period of significant growth and transformation as the nation began rebuilding after the American Civil War. This is an authentic piece of American history.
