Item description
EFFECTIVE SPEECH Including Public Speaking, Mental Training and the Development of Personality: a Complete Course by Watkins de Bower (Complete Set in Six Volumes Revised Edition, 1940)
? Author: Dwight Everett Watkins, M.A. (1878-1954)
? Collaborator: Herbert Francis de Bower, LL.B. (1873-1940)
? Publisher: Markus-Campbell Company Chicago, IL U.S.A. 1940
?Everything we get out of life depends upon our ability to influence others. We do this in two ways ? by our actions, and by our speech?Ideas must be sharpened to a point by vivid statement, expressed in living words, if they are to be driven home to others?it is the spoken word that lights (within others) the blazing fires of conviction.? ? from the Preface.
Self-study course on how to develop effective speech habits and techniques by a University Speech Professor in collaboration with a Lawyer known internationally for developing businesses. Course consists of 12 manuals housed in 6 uniform volumes, (set counts as one book for shipping purposes.)
Books have page numbering as if condensed from 12 to 6 volumes with some introductory material omitted. 125pp + 118pp + 133pp +134pp + 129pp + 160pp.
Dwight Everett Watkins, M.A. (1878-1954) was a professor in the Department of Speech at the University of California at Berkley from 1918 until his retirement. His passion was to expand the knowledge and use of effective technology of speech beyond the university audience. The 1st edition of this work appeared in 1927 and more editions were published after his death.
Herbert Francis de Bower, LL.B. (1873-1940) was thrust into developing businesses in post-war Europe following his service in U.S. Army during WWI. Among the businesses he founded and governmental offices he held, he co-founded the Alexander Hamilton Institute which provided training in law and business. He was a noted author of books on salesmanship and advertising.
Hardcover set has red leatherette cloth boards with gilt lettering and ornamentation on front and spine, but no DJs. Carefully handled with square corners and sound gutters, the set appears unread. Minor shelf-wear. Contents appear complete with no markings in text nor ownership in end papers. Interiors are tight, clean and unmarked.
? Size: 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall, 799pp.
? Condition: Near Fine 6 volume Leatherettes, no Dust Jacket ? No ownership markings.
Copyright 1940. Manufactured in U.S.A. No edition/print-run info found. Page numbering questions indicate this is not a 1st edition, but probably is an early printing of this edition. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR.
Notes on Condition/Edition ratings:
Fine ? means like new, but any book produced over 10 years ago isn't ?brand new? or even ?new.? Booksellers needed some word to describe this...
Like New ? A new book, no marks no damage (except maybe remainder marks or shelf-wear) except not obtained directly from the publisher or in packaging from the publisher.
Good ? How someone else might take care of a book. Also referred to as ?standard.? This is the most likely condition for books of this age title, shows the book has been read or previously owned.
Acceptable ? How a young child, student or a librarian might take care of a book. (Either trying to make sure someone doesn't steal it by plastering ownership everywhere, filled it with copious notes or a book that has been damaged.)
Poor ? Combination of ?acceptable? factors above. Most likely with water damage as well. Might have missing pages (you should ask).
Near ? Means ?almost? in an optimistic sense. e.g., ?Near Fine? means very good, but on the high end.
1st Thus ? Unique somehow, maybe 1st paperback, new illustrator, misprint or even the 1st edition. A collector might desire this copy.
