The VTEC solenoid actually allows oil to flow to the internal galleries of the overhead camshaft. This means that the housing of the solenoid is holding back full engine oil pressure. A spool solenoid valve can direct the flow of hydraulic fluid. The valve is made up of spools that rotate or slide to block and open channels in a hydraulic system.
