Item description

Vintage original Release Dialogue Script from the 1960's British sex-themed drama, THE IDOL, released in 1966 in the US by Paramount Pictures and directed by Daniel Petrie. Set during the Swinging Sixties in London, the plot entails a rebellious student (Michael Parks) who disrupts the lives of all around him, leading to disastrous consequences. The cast includes Jennifer Jones, John Leyton, Jennifer Hilary, Guy Doleman, Natasha Pyne, Jack Watson, and Jeremy Bulloch. This "Release Dialogue Script" is not a screenplay but a post-production script, which provides a log of every visual action and every audible sound for each of the frames and footage on each reel of film. It is dated August 3, 1966 and consists, we believe, of over 90 pages plus one blank page at the end, all of which is bound together by two staples along the left side. The film's title was handwritten along the spine. To the best of our knowledge, this Release Dialogue Script is complete and in fine+ condition with some creases and signs of wear on the top left corner of the title page; a small stain on the bottom right corner of the title page; a very small diagonal crease on the bottom right corner of the first eight pages; and a 3.25 in. diagonal crease on the bottom right corner of the last blank page with random signs of wear along the first four inches of the right edge. Carlo Ponti originally sent Jennifer Jones a script written by Ugo Liberatore, suggesting she appear in it alongside her son Robert Walker Jr, playing mother and son. However Jones was reluctant to play the mother of her own son and declined. Joseph E. Levine subsequently acquired the script, had it rewritten by an English writer and signed Kim Stanley to star. It was mostly shot in London and, three days before filming was to begin, Stanley fell ill; the producers offered the role to Jones, who accepted. The film's director, Daniel Petrie, had earlier directed the 1961 film, A Raisin in the Sun. This Jennifer Jones film was rarely aired on TV and was the first film Jones made after her husband, David O. Selznick, died the year before.
