Item description
Produced and published by artist and lithographer Lucien Burleigh, this stunning birds eye perspective of Springfield, Vermont, immediately transports the viewer back in time with its signature aesthetic and distinctive style. This illustration style was widely popular from the middle of the nineteenth century until the 1920s and was used to highlight prominent civil features and entice new residents. Because they do not rely on accurate geographical representations, they often embellish notable buildings and geographic features. Burleigh was an early adopter of the style and one of the nineteenth century's most prolific birds-eye perspective producers.
His works are contained in the Smithsonian, Boston Library, and Library of Congress, and he is considered one of the prolific cartographers of the style. This depiction of Springfield shows the city in a period of significant growth and transformation both economically and culturally. The establishment of mills and factories in the city limits and attracted eager residents. The Jones and Lamson Machine Tool Company became a well-known manufacturer reputed for its commitment to innovation and craftsmanship.
One of the original New Hampshire grants, Springfield, was established in 1761, and its rich soil attracted farmers from across the nation as well as Western Europe. The Black River runs through the town and has become an iconic piece of local geography and allowed a thriving milling industry in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This is a genuine piece of American and cartographical history, and Vermont has maintained its distant cultural heritage and traditions.
