Item description

Produced and published by one of the most prolific cartographers of the time, Oakley Hoopes Bailey, this bird's eye perspective of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, captures the city in a period of significant prosperity, growth, and transformation as the nation recovered from the Civil War and neared the turn of the twentieth century amid the industrial revolution. Bailey's career spanned more than five decades, and his work remains some of the most revered of the form and is notable for the intricate detail, artistic flourishes, and distinctive aesthetic. Bailey produced nearly four hundred panoramic maps starting in 1871 with a view of Milwaukee. Pawtucket is located on the border with Massachusetts and has been a central manufacturing hub since its earliest years, with numerous groups of immigrants settling in the city to gain access to economic opportunities producing a wide variety of products, including yarn, textiles, iron, and more. The Slater Mill was established in 1793 and the first fully mechanized cotton mill in the United States. The central falls powered numerous mills and spurred continuous growth throughout the nineteenth century as residents built neighborhoods and communities rooted in shared cultural heritage and traditions that exist to this day. Bird's eye perspectives were used as marketing materials to entice residents and merchants alike and featured prominent civic buildings, educational institutions, and natural attractions. Panoramic maps bear a unique style that immediately transports the viewer back in time and creates an indelible bond between the past and present and illustrating the regions development and evolution.
