Created for the Texas General Land Office by German-born lithographer and produced by August Gast, this depiction of Denton County shows the area in a period of significant growth as part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in the latter portions of the nineteenth century. The region was experiencing considerable prosperity during the so-called Gilded Age as the industrial revolution and diaspora of Americans across the nation ushered in a new era as the United States approached the turn of the century. North Texas and Denton County remain an essential hub for education and business and have developed a distinct culture since the area was first settled in the 1840s.
By the time of the release of this map, the County Seat, Denton, had become well-known regionally, and the University of North Texas would become one of the area's best institutions for higher education in 1890. Denton developed a bustling Jazz community during the twentieth century and holds the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival annually, which attracts artists, musicians, and tourists from across the globe. The years following the conclusion of the American Civil War sparked a population increase in the County, and many residents formed neighborhoods and communities based on cultural lines, many of which exist to this day.
This map is truly a piece of American cartographical history that transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. County maps provide a unique perspective into how towns have evolved during different periods.
