It’s been about a year since the Joker disappeared from Gotham City without a trace, and just when people thought he was gone forever, he comes back with a bang and promptly causes a bloody massacre among the police officers of the Gotham Police Department. But as soon as Batman becomes aware of the new threat, the Joker announces on television that Mayor Hady will meet his death this very night.
What the Joker is up to is not clear for a long time: he re-stages his first actions like the announced murders, surpassing himself in cruelty and unpredictability, but he also kidnaps Alfred Pennyworth. Apart from the usual cat-and-mouse chase, which the Joker plays with Batman, the hero has to ask himself the agonizing question whether the clown knows his true identity. For the Joker, this is all a big reckoning with his rival. He wants to show him what their true relationship is like and who his real family is.
