Notes from the archive: As an academic study of materials, craftsmanship and design, Conservation By Design instructs and shows the extraordinary value of lumber, one of the many gifts of trees. A portion of this book is devoted to essays detailing and promoting the main concepts for wood conservation and purposeful design. All of the examples and essays have a commonality expressed as a question by contributor Silas Kopf, “Apart from choosing our materials more carefully, what else can woodworkers do to demonstrate our respect for the precious timber resource upon which our livelihood depends.” Conservation By Design grew out of a juried event – 76 artists were invited and 28 were eventually judged upon how their work satisfied the meaning of the title. More than 70 works are presented with details and artist’s commentary. Work included by Garry Knox Bennett, Jon Brooks, Fred Baier, John Makepeace, John Dunnigan, David Ebner, Silas Kopf, Thomas Loeser, Wendy Maruyama, Alphonse Mattia, Roseanne Somerson and Ed Zucca to name a few. Materials vary in form and splendor from reused baseball bats to manila hemp paper to Sheoak to galvanized steel with rosewood veneer! As a published exhibition collection it is wondrous and also beautifully quantifies the adage, “Waste not, want not!
