SUB CHASE: It was Mission Impossible" come true: a sunken Soviet sub plucked by the CIA from the floor of the Pacific, with the help of Howard Hughes and,a giant mechanical claw. It was unclear what the CIA had learned, how much the caper had cost and how the Reds would react. Equally interesting was how the story broke and the efforts made by the CIA to bottle up one of the best spy yarns in years (page 66).

PYTHONMANIA: A troupe of outrageously anarchic British comedians who call themselves MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS has turned into one of the most successful programs on American public television. Harry F. Waters reviews Pythonmania and discusses its stupendous silliness.

DESERVING RICH: One hardship of being wealthy in a recession, notes New Yorker cartoonist William Hamilton in My Turn, is that the poor get all the attention. To square accounts, he tells--in words and drawings--what heiress Maisie Grace (above) and others of the deserving rich are up to.

TWO AT THE TOP: England's Francis Bacon is the most important painter of the human figure. Brice Marden is the leading young American abstract painter. Current exhibitions by each display the extremes of modern art. Douglas Davis analyzes their work, with two pages of color reproductions.

IT WON'T WORK: In the event of a new oil embargo, some armchair strategists have suggested the U.S. could easily seize Saudi Arabia's oil fields. Senior Editor Arnaud de Borchgrave spent several weeks traveling in the area and explains why a U.S. military intervention is not feasible.
