GUSTAV KLIMT "THE KISS" ART INSPIRED TRINKET JEWELRY DRESSER BOX GERMAN ARTIST

Austrian painter Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) began his life in poverty, the second of seven children born to a jewelry engraver.  Despite his humble childhood, a scholarship enabled him to study and train at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts.  Recognized as a brilliant artist, he had a tremendous impact on the Art Nouveau movement.  He was a founding member of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who revolted against traditional style of the day and encouraged varied unconventional artistic style.  Influences to his style include Egyptian, Classical Greek and Byzantine.  Klimt's paintings are distinguished by his use of highly ornamental gold/silver/colored spirals, swirls and geometric shapes to embellish his subject and his use of symbolism to portray themes of beauty, love, life and death.

  • It measures approximately 4" square by 2.25" tall.
  • It is fashioned from heavy Lucite or acrylic to appear as glass on the textured sides and patterned top.
  • Has a mirrored bottom on the inside.
  • Has a hinged lid with chain support when open.

The Kiss (1908) is one of Klimt's most famous pieces.  It was created during his "Golden Phase".  Many of his paintings from this period used gold leaf.  The Kiss depicts a couple in various shades of gold sharing a kiss against a bronze back ground  The rest of the painting dissolves into shimmering, extravagant flat patterning which has clear ties to the Art Nouveau movement.  It has been speculated that Klimt and his companion, Emilie Floge, were the models for this masterpiece.

Posthumously, Klimt's art has been appreciated beyond expectation.  As recently as 2006 Klimt's Adele Block-Bauer I was placed at auction where it is reported to have sold for $135M, making it the highest price ever paid for a single painting at the time; an unexpected successful outcome for a painter who described himself as nothing special.
