These are sixteen short stories and a long story which comprise a body of fiction that is entertaining, provocative, and enlightening. For those readers who are not familiar with the full range of Mr. Cozzens' novels, beginning with S. S. San Pedro in 1931, these stories are indications of the astonishing variety in experience as well as the versatility in style that so conspicuously distinguishes his writing.

The book is divided into five sections. The first and second, embracing ten stories, are acute recollections of youthful experiences. Two stories about the Civil War make up the next section. Four stories, under the heading "Love and Kisses," examine the inevitable changing relationships between men and women. The concluding section, the long story "Eyes to See," is again an adult recollection of an earlier time, and like the other stories, it reveals a sensibility that reflects maturity and reason.  (#0000412)
