This is a lovely bird and flowers round circle brooch or pin made by Coro (unsigned) from the early 1940s. Before 1955 when jewelry designs were first allowed to be copyrighted, the jewelry makers used patents to protect their designs. This brooch is marked on the back “DES. PAT. PEND”, which is short for Design Patent Pending. This meant that the patent had been applied for and was pending approval. Once it was approved the jewelry company would be able to stamp the patent number on the piece of jewelry. Katz filed for the patent on March 19, 1942 and on April 4, 1942 Adolph Katz received the patent number D132078 for the design of this brooch. (see photo of patent, you can search the United States Patent and Trademark Office to see the original filing). I believe this later became a Coro Craft piece of jewelry. I added a photo of the brooch to the patent page so it is easier to compare the two.

The brooch measures approximately 2 inches in diameter. I believe this is sterling silver since these Coro pins seem to all have been made from sterling, but it is not marked and has not been tested, so I cannot say for sure. It weighs .40 ounces on my postage scale, which converts to 11.34 grams.

It is in great vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. It does have an older patina forming, I have not polished it, and I will leave that up to you as many people prefer the older patina that forms with age. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.

The brooch would make a great addition to your collection of wearable art. It is perfect for any bird lover, bird watcher or Ornithologist. It would make a perfect accessory on a hat or a lapel for your favorite bird person. It is also very collectible since it was created before the patent was actually granted.
