This is a one of a kind hand crafted piece of art that is also a brooch, the workmanship and detail is incredible. I contacted the artist, Patrick Conlin by email regarding this brooch and he replied and told me that it was “derived from illustrations in the Book of Kells, an early Irish Bible manuscript”. When he created this brooch he was living on the Olympic peninsula. He wasn’t sure of the specific type of bird it is, but he did say that “this style of bird is often shown with a branch or vine, with fruit, in its mouth, often associated with the Tree of Life”. He told me that the bird is “acid etched and the rim cast bronze.” Patrick’s jewelry is made by hand and he specializes in Norse, Viking and Celtic design interpretations. This brooch is signed © Conlin 96 and is one of his earlier pieces of jewelry. He is well known for his stunning jewelry, buckles and his gorgeous metal vessels, and owns Moonbox Studio. This is a large and substantial brooch, which measures approximately 3 inches in diameter and weighs 2.25 ounces on my postage scale, which converts to 63.79 grams.

The brooch is in nice vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. I have not polished the brooch; it has a lovely patina to it and I didn't want to change that. There are a few tiny spots of tarnish, but you don't really see them without the magnification. I will leave any polishing and cleaning up to you if you so desire. This is an unusual and beautiful brooch and is sure to be a conversation piece. It would be stunning as an accent with a scarf, on a coat or jacket lapel, with a black dress placed right at the “V” for a special occasion, or on a sweater with your favorite pair of jeans.
