The Legend of Freedom Hill by Linda Jacobs Altman

Grade:  1-3

Summary:  In California in the 1850s, two girls become friends. Both are outsiders: Sophie because she is Jewish and Rosabel because she is black. Although slavery is illegal in California, catching runaway slaves is not.  Rosabel has freedom papers, but her mother, Miz Violet, is a runaway slave.

When a slave catcher takes Miz Violet away, Rosabel and Sopnie know they need to do something. They set out to find gold so they can buy Miz Violet back from the slave catcher. Through perseverance, the two friends find enough gold to buy the freedom of all the captured slaves.
