Author: John Steptoe (1950-1989) was an American author and illustrator, best known for his contributions to children's literature. He gained recognition for his work in the field, particularly for his book "Stevie," which he both wrote and illustrated.

One of his most notable and groundbreaking works is "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters," published in 1987. This picture book, set in Africa, retells the traditional Cinderella story with a unique cultural perspective. It received critical acclaim and won the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration.

Tragically, John Steptoe's promising career was cut short when he passed away at the age of 38 in 1989. Despite his relatively brief time in the literary world, Steptoe's impact on children's literature has endured, and his contributions are still celebrated today.
