There was feverish placer mining in the winter of 1869 and the first quartz claim was found on Washington's birthday the following year. By summer there were a thousand prospectors swarming over the hills. According to an old story, a movement was launched to make Julian the county seat and lost by two votes. Though gold production waned after the first decade, Julian proved to be an ideal area for decidious fruit, and the first orchards were planted at the height of the mining boom. Julian is the center of the magnificent mountain recreation area of San Diego county. The first Apple Day was held in 1909, the first Wildflower show opened in 1928 and is of international importance to botanists and flower lovers. The people of Julian are proud of their heritage this centennial year.
