Julia Templeton Obituary

TEMPLETON, Julia Julia Terry Templeton died on November 7th. She is survived by her husband Ronald K. Templeton and son Morgan Stuart Templeton and his wife Catherine Templeton. She had three grandchildren; Julia McCabe Templeton, Brooks Hampton Templeton, and Catherine Stuart Templeton of Charleston. She has two brothers; John S. Terry of Sacramento, California and Gene S. Terry of Jefferson, Texas, and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Dr. W.S. and Lucille Morgan Terry of Jefferson, Texas. She took great pride in her sixth generation Texan heritage. Mrs. Templeton grew up in Jefferson, Texas, and attended Gulfpark College in Gulfport, Mississippi, and Burnham by the Sea in Newport, Rhode Island. She graduated from Southern Methodist University and held a master's degree from East Texas State University. Her professional life was devoted to directing student union programs particularly working with students in the development of student government associations. As a professional she worked at the University of Texas, Texas A&M, East Texas State University, and finally at The University of Georgia where she met and married her husband. After the birth of her son Morgan she was determined to be a full time mother and homemaker. She was significantly involved in a variety of activities. As an undergraduate at SMU her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta was particularly important to her and became the Province Collegiate Director for the sorority, a post she held for nearly a decade. In Charleston, she became heavily involved in genealogical organizations. She has been an officer and stalwart member of the Fort Sullivan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, Daughters of the American Colonists, The United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Fuller Society, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Her commitment to volunteerism went beyond genealogical societies. She was an active member of the Women's Council of the Gibbes Museum. Julia served as chairman of the Catering Committee at the Gibbes which was responsible for raising substantial amounts of money for the Museum. She was chairman of the mother's group at Miss Mason's School, and served as president of the Northbridge Pool Association and a member of the Northbridge Garden Club. Julia held membership in the Ladies Benevolent Society and Ladies Fuel Society. She was a member of the Garden Club of Charleston and was serving at her death as chairman of the house and garden tours committee. Mrs. Templeton was perhaps happiest in her life entertaining people in her home. She was a marvelous cook and party giver. In the 1980's she authored a cook book which was sold widely in Charleston. She loved people, was committed to working with them as a hostess, committee member, and as a friend. The spirit she brought to her life was truly magnificent and she will be missed by her family, her friends, and her community. Mrs. Templeton was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church. The family will be receiving friends from 5:30 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, November 10, 2005 at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy.
