This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE RELIGIOUS PENDANT that was made in the ART NOUVEAU period of 1910. It is signed E.D. on the lower right for Jean Baptiste Emile Dropsy who was an Art Nouveau jewelry maker (1858-1923). The pendant is made from 18K GOLD and FINELY DETAILED with PLIQUE-A-JOUR TRANSLUCENT BLUE ENAMEL.
*Plique-a-jour (French for "letting in daylight") is a vitreous enameling technique where the enamel is applied in cells and has no backing so light can shine through the translucent enamel. It is like a miniature version of stained glass that is very technically challenging and time consuming with a high failure rate.
This Miraculous Medallion Pendant displays a relief of the Blessed Mother Mary represented as the QUEEN OF HEAVEN and EARTH with rays of light streaming from her fingers. She is crushing the head of a serpent beneath her foot to proclaim Satan and all his followers are helpless before her (Gn 3:15).
The medallion measures 7/8” in diameter and the total weight is 4.9 grams. The back is not engraved. I very rarely come across this scene, so DON’T MISS THIS ONE!
