This is a great Alphabet learning toy done in an Abacus style, that is made from smooth sanded wood with brightly colored hand painted wood pieces or tile blocks with letters, pictures and numbers on them. There is a letter on one side that flips over to show a picture of something that begins with that letter on the other side. This was meant to help children learn their ABCs.
It is in very nice condition as you can see by the pictures. There is a small red mark on one end, could be from a crayon (see arrow in picture) and a few tiny scratches from use. You have to look hard to find them. It measures 6 inches in length and the diameter on the end is 3 inches. I don't know when this was made, but the choice for the letter Q is quite unusual. I don't know of many children who would even know what a Quill Pen is.
The wood is a lovely golden color with beautiful wood grain showing though. It has been shellacked to protect the finish.
Pictures included are: Apple, Banana, Cat, Duck, Elephant, Flower, Grapes, Hen, Insect, Jug, Kite, Lion, Mouse, Net, Orange, Pig, Quill Pen, Rabbit, Sun, Tiger, Umbrella, Vase, Whale, Xylophone, Yacht (although it looks like a sailboat to me), Zebra, and the numbers 1 through 8.
This would be a fun addition to anyone's collection of vintage toys. Great for anyone who is a teacher and enjoys old learning games.
