Additional Information

This bird's eye view map was produced as a collaboration between some of the most influential cartographers of the era: Albert Ruger, J.J. Stoner, and Beck & Pauli. This depiction of Ann Arbor, Michigan, shows the city in a period of significant prosperity, growth, and transformation as the nation recovered following the conclusion of the American Civil War. The Industrial Revolution brought considerable wealth to the American Midwest as the need for manufacturing facilities drew residents from across the nation eager for economic opportunities. Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan, which was founded in 1837 and remains a respected institution of higher education and an influential anchor for the city's vibrant culture and development.

By 1880 Ann Arbor had grown considerably since its first settlement in 1824, and numerous neighborhoods and communities had been established along cultural lines and shared heritages, many of which exist to this day. Ruger was an early pioneer of the bird's eye perspective form, which bears a distinct aesthetic and unique style that is immediately recognizable and transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the present and the past. Panoramic maps were used as marketing materials to entice residents and merchants alike and featured prominent economic opportunities, educational institutions, religious communities, as well as natural attractions.

Ann Arbor remains one of Michigan's most iconic cities, and this is an authentic piece of American cartographical history that captures a golden age in the city as the nation neared the turn of the century.
