This is one of the best Civil War memoirs written by a Union officer, and, also, maybe one of the best kept secrets. This book was not even originally published until 1928, long after the Civil War ended, and long after the death of General John Gibbon, so it has been in obscurity since its inception. If you are a student of the Civil War, then this book is worth the investment, as it is insightful, and has a unique point of view. Gibbon is a natural writer, and his easy, relaxed, writing style is also easy on the reader. I am grateful that the publisher, Morningside Bookshop, saw value in the memoir, and has made it available to the public at an affordable price.

John Gibbon served in the US Army for 44 years and this autobiography covers his time during the Civil War. He writes in a manner that is straight forward relative to the effusive writing style of the 1880's. General Gibbon also does a good job of providing observations and supporting letters/material, though does not really get involved in the strategy/ thinking of particular battles with the exception of Meade's Council of War on July 2nd. He is certainly a disciplinarian which is observed in his training doctrine with the Iron Brigade early in the Civil War and his execution of 1/100 'deserters'. Like most books of first person accounts of the Civil War, this was written/edited many years after the war, though does not get into the revisionist history as some other writings have done. The one exception is regarding Gibbon's conduct during the Battle of the Wilderness with General Hancock. At the end, he also discusses some of the 'lessons' of the Civil War, including regiments raised, appointment of political appointees as officer's and long distance command (i.e the War Department). This is a good book as it speaks from a commander's view, while acknowledging that historians will judge the actions / decisions made later.
