Kola Marque Tonique et Apertif by Jules Cheret - Art PrintKnown as the father of the modern poster, Jules Cheret (1836-1932) was a French painter and lithographer. He worked on everything from theater to advertising. Kola Marque was one of the many fortified wines available in turn-of-the-century France. These products, made with coca or coffee, were sold to stimulate the body and spirit; not as a medicine, however, but as an aperitif. Here Cheret depicts a North African dancer with a bottle in her hand. It is a simple poster, and his design is inhibited by the inclusion of too much text, which was a classic mistake made by early advertising clients.1883/France
