1950s Lefton Mother Coffee Cappucino Latte Cup and Saucer Pink White Floral Tea #2593

This large cup and saucer would make the perfect gift for Mom on any special occasion, Mother's Day, Birthday, even Christmas!  This is a vintage 1950's era delicate bone china cup and saucer made by Lefton Japan for a generous Cappucino or Latte for the perfect start to the morning.  This piece was manufactured after the "Occupied Japan" post WWII period.  The #2593 style cup is in well maintained pre owned condition and features 22K gold trim with "Mother" on one side, and "Coffee" on the other.  There are no chips or cracks, but there is wear to the gold trim on the rim of the cup and saucer.  It is offered in white with pink trim and lovely rose floral transfers on both sides and measures 4.25 inches in diameter by 2.5 inches tall with a 6.875 inch diameter saucer and holds a full 10 ounces of your favorite morning beverage.

For more than 70 years, Lefton China has been an importer of fine china products.  A number of pieces are popular collectibles, particularly during the period in which Lefton's products were made in Occupied Japan.  George Zoltan Lefton left his native Hungary in 1939 and moved to Chicago, Illinois.  While he had no experience with porcelain or china, he was an avid collector and founded Lefton China in 1940, taking advantage of his move to the USA to explore his passion for fine china.

When Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941, many Japanese-owned businesses were looted in Chicago.  Lefton helped board up a business owned by Nunome, a Japanese-American friend.  After the war, Nunome assisted Lefton in developing essential relationships with china producers in Occupied Japan.  The first pieces of Lefton China with the "Made in Occupied Japan" mark reached the United States in 1946.  Lefton China produced in Occupied Japan included a wide range of pieces, dating from 1946 to 1952.  Designs ranged from delicate, formal pieces with gold edging and soft floral patterns to the whimsical and playful designs of the 1950's.

Lefton China continued to be produced in Japan until the 1970's. Production in the 1980's and beyond moved to Taiwan and Malaysia.  The family sold Lefton China in 2001, but production under the Lefton China label continues today.
