The Artist:

Chuck Oberstein (1935 - 2002) was born in Los Angeles, California. and was an American painter, best known for ethereal multi-dimensional clown paintings.

He graduated from Montebello High School in east L.A.

He worked as a jeweler in the family business and later at a retail gem exchange. He had an epiphany one day when he was encouraged to be an artist by a friend, and quit that very same day.

Oberstein is known world wide as the best modern era painter of clowns, and maybe of all time. His art has left an iconic legacy with his creation of the Wall Street Journal Clown. In his early years, after living in Europe he became influenced by artists' styles in France and Belgium. During this era of Chuck's works he painted seascapes, horses, human subjects. He also occasionally painted exquisite landscapes and still life works like this piece. The tag on the back of the frame of this piece indicates it was from Belgium, so it was likely from this European era.
