Composition No. 1

by Marc Saporta

Translated from the French by Richard Howard

New York: Simon & Schuster, (1963).

First English language edition.

Loose sheets housed in a clamshell cardboard box of black and orange with titles to front.

Sheets are fine; in a fine box designed by Janet Halverson.

A vintage copy of an unusual, experimental book by French writer Marc Saporta (1923-2009).

Consists of 150 loose pages that the reader is encouraged to arrange and read in any way they choose. Each page has a self-contained narrative. What makes this even more interesting is that this actually works. As Saporta himself explained, "the time and order of events control a man's life more than the nature of these events."

Very scarce, especially in this superior condition.

150 loose pages, (4-7/8" by 7-3/4") each.
