Importance: An extra-illustrated King James Bible printed in 1677 by John Hayes the Printer of the University of Cambridge. The Bible was printed during the Restoration period in Great Britain prior to the death of King Charles II (1630-1685). It was finely hand Ruled in red and it contains over 205 illustrations, an extra work (WBP), along with numerous historiated initials. The Bible contains a fascinating manuscript that was likely written by a woman who was Theologically grappling with doctrine.

Binding: Thick Quarto (9.3125” x 7.25” x 3.6875”). 4 lb 10 oz. Restored and recased late 17^th c. or early 18^th c. ornately gilt tooled full fine black morocco leather binding with a.e.g. Original spine relaid with five raised bands, and six compartments with triple-lined borders, fleurs-de-lis’, crowns, flowers, etc. Third compartment with title in capitals HOLY BIBLE. Boards with rolled pattern borders, edges, and turn-ins with dragonflies, grasshoppers, bees, snails, giraffe weevils, snakes, iguanas, etc. Modern plain endpapers (over original paste-downs) with two original fly-leaves at front and one at rear. Slightly worn overall.

Provenance: First two original fly-leaves with genealogical manuscript entries, baptisms, and deaths of the Stone Family and those related to them. By age 13, Ann Stone tragically lost her entire family.

John Stone (16??–April 9^th 1720) married Elizabeth ? (16??–September 13^th 1730). They had seven children: 1^st John Stone (January 9^th 1710/11–February 10^th 1714/15), 2^nd Elizabeth Stone (August 4^th 1712–February 8^th 1712/13), 3^rd Thomas Stone (September 17^th 1713–April 13^th 1714), 4^th John Stone (February 21^st 1715–August 27^th 1715), 5^th Hester Stone (November 11^th 1716–April 4^th 1720), 6^th Anne Stone (March 17^th 1717–17??), 7^th Elizabeth Stone (December 7^th 1719–October 23^rd 1720). Ann’s grandmother Mrs. Hester Mede died on January 21^st 1732, and later her Aunt Mrs. Hester Mede died on March 21^st 1732. Hugh Delane Tilham died on October 27^th 1744. Anne Stone (March 17^th 1717–17??) married William Power (17??-17??). Perhaps they had only one child: 1^st Sophia Anne Power (January 2^nd 1745/46).

The Trinity in Unity: Three Person thurs [thus] Intimate to each other are numerically one: and tharefore St. Astin [Saint Augustine] represents this much better: bye that Self consciousness which is between those Distinct faculties in us of memory: understanding: and will: which know and feal who ever is in each other: wee remember what wee understanding and will: we understand what we remember and will: and what wee will wee remember and understand: and therefore those three faculties: which are thus intimate to each other make one man; and if wee can sopose three infinite minds and Persons: thus conscious of whatsoever is in each other as thay are of them Selfs: thay can be but one numerical God.

Similar to the above manuscript from the early or late 18^th c., it was common to see names scribbled out for anonymity for various reasons. This one was perhaps written by someone named ? Medes, likely a woman. The manuscript shows a struggle between her mind and the Trinity doctrine, as if she was trying to prove to herself the truth of the doctrine by finding a human equivalent or else the doctrine cannot be trusted. The manuscript also suggests a struggle between her mind and two opposing doctrines of the time, Trinity and Unitarianism, or she may have been trying to reconcile them with her own beliefs. The OED appears to record the use of Self consciousness only from 1675.
