RACHEL RISING VOL. 02: FEAR NO MALUS SC (ABSTRACT STUDIOS)

Rachel and Jet will not stay dead. It's a mystery to the two BFFs, but they suspect it has something to do with a 10-year old serial killer and a witch who wants revenge on Manson, the little town with a wicked past. Critics are raving about Rachel Rising, and the series made the Horror Writers Association 2012 Recommended Reading List. Fear No Malus collects issues 7-12 of the Eisner Nominated series, written and drawn by Terry Moore. [(W/A/CA) Terry Moore]

Rachel Rising, the acclaimed horror comic book series from artist Terry Moore, is heading to television.  Alcon Television Group, the TV arm of Alcon Entertainment, has made Rising the first property it has picked up in its 10 months of existence.  Moore will serve as an executive producer with Lloyd Levin, a producer well-versed in the comics sphere with credits such as the Hellboy movies and Watchmen. Alcon’s Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson and Sharon Hall will also exec produce.  Ben Roberts, an exec at Alcon, is on board to produce. Rising, with its smart mix of drama and horror, has some commonalities with The Walking Dead, including its audience. And it’s no coincidence that Roberts chased it; he was a production consultant on AMC’s zombie drama.  A horror story for people who don't like horror stories, Rising centers on a woman named Rachel who wakes up dead in a shallow grave. She begins to unravel the mystery of her death while crossing paths with not only friends but also a mysterious blond woman who is tracking her and a horrific little girl named Zoe, out on a killing spree. Also figuring into the mix is the history of the local town, magic and witchcraft.  The comic book series was nominated for best new series for the 2012 Harvey Awards. Moore has long been noted for his ability to capture the female voice with his award-winning comics such as Strangers in Paradise and Echo.  We caught up with Moore at Comic Con this year and asked him whether it was always the same deal, or whether perhaps the property had fallen through and then caught on again in a different spot.  “No–actually it was acquired last year and it takes a while for them to ramp up and then earlier this year the company announced that they were going to move forward with it–they’re going to make a pilot and work it,” Moore told ComicBook.com. “So they are and I had a meeting with them today. Things look great and more power to them. It’s in its early stage and they’re working on a pilot.”  Of course, last year he also intimated that Rachel Rising might not be long for this world. A dark and twisted series, Moore said that in an increasingly violent world he wasn’t sure how long he wanted to stay on board. This year, though, he seems to have changed his tune somewhat. “If the TV worked, I would be crazy to stop the book, right?” Moore laughed. “Which is actually going to work out fine because this whole original first 24 issues of Rachel was really just a setup. I always pictured her character as what she does beyond this setup, once everything is established. So it’s kind of like a Bill Cosby thing; ‘I told you that story so I can tell you this next story. So that will work.’”
