Recorded live at the Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California on 24 November and at the Lawlor Events Center, Reno, Nevada on 23 November 1991. This is my favorite concert video of all those officially released by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Taken from two shows on the 1991 "Into the Great Wide Open" tour, seamlessly edited to appear as if it's one show. It's a shame that this is out of print, and never officially released on DVD (if you see any DVDs of this, as of this date, those are obviously bootlegs made from the VHS or Laserdisc).

This is not only a great performance from an outstanding band, but it's filmed and presented just right. To my thinking, fans want to see the band perform essentially as if they were seeing the show from a great seat in the audience, or from several great seats in the audience. What fans do not want (and thankfully do not get here) is some "gimmicked up" MTV-like jittery movement, slow motion, "arty" changes to black and white, lengthy fan shots, and other non-concert footage. On this video, it's all concert, no gimmicks. There are some shots of the crowd, but that's almost always during the break between songs. When something's happening on stage, you see it. The only "creativity" the director uses is that the cameras sometimes pan slowly across from the stage, giving you the perspective you might get if you were slowly "swooping" sideways while looking at the stage. That actually is a nice perspective, and not overly used. But everything's presented at normal speed, no slow-motion, no chromatic changes. Again, you see what you would see if you were in the audience, though with a really great, semi-mobile seat. Here they are: KING'S HIGHWAY, TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, I WON'T BACK DOWN, FREE FALLIN', OUT IN THE COLD, PSYCHOTIC REACTION, BEN'S BOOGIE (INSTRUMENTAL), DON'T COME AROUND HERE NO MORE, HERE COMES MY GIRL, I'M TIRED JOEY BOY, INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN, LOVE IS A LONG ROAD, REFUGEE, RUNNIN' DOWN A DREAM, LONELY WEEKENDS, BUILT TO LAST, MAKIN' SOME NOISE. All the songs are presented in their entirety, though the credits are rolling at the end of the last song. Other than a couple minutes at the beginning where you see the band warming up, this video is all concert, nothing else. Which is as it should be. Now since this is a compilation of two concerts, a sharp eyed observer might notice very minor differences between the nights, but I didn't. The sound quality is first rate (especially for VHS), no overdubs - just the actual band playing great.

This is the last tour and last official concert video to include Heartbreaker's drummer Stan Lynch. Stan was in the band from the Heartbreaker's beginning (1976), and always a major part of the group. The band today often sounds decent/ok without him, but to my ears it lacks the true "Heartbreaker's feel" and sound, without Stan as a member. So this to me is an especially important recording, as it's the last officially released chance to see and hear Stan with the band. You even get to hear Stan sing lead on one of the songs. Also you get to hear Howie Epstein (who died a few years ago), playing and singing well with the band. Scott Thurston is also with the band at these shows, not as an official member then, but helping to round out the sound, sometimes playing bass, other times other instruments. So - along with Tom Petty himself, and founding members Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench - this is essentially a six person line-up, which I prefer over the huge line-up with horns and backing singers from "Pack Up the Plantation". This is not quite a complete concert from 1991, it's too bad they didn't include "Learning to Fly" and "You Got Lucky", which were performed at those shows but not included here. Still, it's great to see and hear what they do give you, a nearly complete concert of entirely complete songs. At any rate, enough said. If you like TP and the Heartbreakers, you will enjoy this tremendously.
