Tide stains. Rust stains from the iron in the inks. Illustrated. Pencil marks on the FFEP.  Withdrawn from the "Ohio School Library" in Wayne County. Leather binding, stamped with paper label and gilt, stained, chipped and rubbed, with some tearing to the hinges.  We have conditioned the leather.

This book compiles the four volumes of Dr. Robertson's original work (published 1817), itself a portion of a 12 book set on the history of the English speaking world, to which are added a bit about Robertson's life and some study questions.

Ohio is a "land grant" state, with rules governing education and libraries established by the original Congress of the US upon transfer of the NW territories from Great Britain following the successful prosecution of independence. Each county was limited to a specific land and population size; with a centrally located county seat. Schools were required, as well as State Universities.

This book was acquired with a sizable pile of similarly bound books with the same label affixed. As the population of Ohio grew, these central libraries were expanded to outlying communties and new books were sought.

About the time of the Civil War, Harper and Brothers (Now HarperCollins Publishers) was dismissed as the "official" publisher of Ohio School books and their production was moved to Ohio--Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati. Weekly Reader (among many others) grew out of this effort.
