A practical sized colored porcelain bowl!  Almost 4" tall, and 9" wide. Thrown in two pieces and joined. This piece has some imperfections in the clear glaze - there are grains of undissolved material and brush marks - if perfect this would have been a $100 pot. Still pretty to look at, and designed for hard use! This is another piece that's been hiding in my basement in a bin that I thought had flowerpots in it! Red, yellow, blues...

Sometimes I have to wonder if I will ever learn not to use a new glaze on a nice pot. This is what test pots are for... LOL, I will be listing a box full of those soon, teeny tiny bowls!!!

To create this piece, I made up a "batch" of each color by hand mixing the colored stains into a pound of clay, then making layers of the colors into a "loaf". I threw a porcelain bowl on the wheel and stopped at about half the size I wanted. I then kneaded the colored clay loaf very lightly and threw a bottomless cylinder to match the size of the top of the bowl. I flipped the colored cylinder onto the bowl and joined with some vinegar enhanced slip. I then finished throwing the bowl "normally" and let it dry a bit. I scraped the clay gently with a steel rib to clean off up the throwing slip and expose the crisp delineation of the colors. Bright yellow and cobalt blue predominate.

The piece was then bisque fired to make the first transition from clay to ceramic. Next I put a clear glaze on top of the piece to provide a non-porous surface for food usage. Then I fired the piece to maturity.

This piece contains no lead and is food safe. Dishwasher safe too, although a bit large for that. Do not microwave please as the different colors expand at different rates. It's not a good shape for cooking but you could reheat in it if you if you start with a cold oven.
