The story revolves around a large scale "Lion King Competition" which inadvertently leads to all manner of violence between the competing martial arts schools, even before the match gets under way. Fei-hung (Jet Li) faces a formidable new adversary in the form of master kicker Club Foot (Xiong Xinxin), whose boss is determined to win the contest at any cost.

A good portion of the running time is devoted to the jealousy Fei-hung feels towards a Russian nobleman (John Wakefield), who is an old acquaintance of Yee (Rosamund Kwan) with obvious feelings for her. The most memorable fight, a wild skirmish which finds Fei-hung battling hatchet-throwing and sword- wielding opponets, comes in the middle third of the film. The best thing about the film is Xiong Xinxin, who gives us a preview of the Tasmanian Devil-like whirlwind he would play later on in Tsui Hark's 'Blade'.
